Skirts aren’t always the most winter friendly item in my wardrobe. But like dresses, when done right, They can be both stylish and comfortable, especially when paired with warm and cozy tights or leggings. A skirt made of heavier fabrics like wool or cashmere can also provide added warmth, while a long midi skirt can also protect against the cold.

Here are five warm winter skirt options to look stylish and chic. I also have a few tips for how to stay warm while wearing them.

Super High Waisted Sweater Pencil Skirt

Nothing says warm like a sweater skirt. And I love this one from Express. It is elegant and classy and is versatile enough to be perfect for a day at the office or a night out. I love that it comes in black and cream, two neutrals that can go with anything. It also comes in bright red if you want to make a statement. Plus, it’s currently on sale for under $70!

The Leah Wool Skirt

When choosing a warm skirt it’s important to pay attention to the material the skirt is made of. Wool is known for being incredibly warm. But sometimes it can be hard to find a skirt that is both warm and stylish. But this skirt from M.M. LaFleur is both. I love the dusty pink color that acts as a neutral and can be paired with just about anything.

Fishtail Midi Knit Skirt

I love this skirt from Amazon because like the name implies it’s flared skirt gives off a fishtail impression. But to me it reminds me of a mermaid tail. It comes in a variety of colors, most are neutral blacks, grays or tans but there’s also a beautiful purple option that I love. It’s also less than $30 which you can’t beat.

Cashmere Midi Sweater Skirt

Cashmere is another great material for a warm winter skirt. Since it helps maintain your natural body temperature it’s actually warmer than wool. That’s why I love this skirt from Banana Republic. Again it ticks off both boxes for being functional and stylish and comes in two amazing colors; dark purple and camel.

Maxi Knit Skirt

This skirt is great if you want to add a pop of color to your winter wardrobe. The sky blue isn’t usually associated with winter and that’s what makes this skirt so perfect. It would be great to brighten up a gloomy day. It seems like these are flying off the shelves (for good reason) and there’s limited stock so make sure to snag one soon!

How to wear silk skirts in the winter

Silk skirts aren’t the most winter friendly garments. Because of winter’s dry air, silk that rubs against sweaters and coats can generate static electricity which makes the silk cling to your body. But sometimes I can’t resist, especially when it comes to this beautiful one from Dillards.

Though silk is said to have some warming qualities, it’s been my experience that it’s not the most winter friendly material. I wouldn’t suggest wearing a silk skirt if you live somewhere that has wet, windy winters. Personally, I wouldn’t wear a silk skirt once the temperature drops below 65ºF. But if you do wear them in the winter, I suggest pairing them with fleece lined tights like I mentioned earlier.
