How to wear black and brown in an outfit

October 6, 2015

You might or might not know or care about fashion rules. Apparently “don’t pair black and brown together” is one of them. But it’s okay if you didn’t know about that rule. You’re about to break it anyways. Cuz it’s chic, it looks good, and anyone could rock the heck out of a black and brown look!

The secret to pulling it off, my friends, is here. So take these 3 tips, use them, and look fabulous exactly the way that you already are!

1) Even out black and brown
One way to balance out your outfit, is to distribute the brown evenly throughout the whole look. Wearing a black dominant outfit? Start adding brown shoes, brown belt, brown jacket, brown handbag, brown scarf, or brown hat. Not all at once, just 2, maybe 3 brown items, so your black dominant outfit becomes black AND brown. Evenly, equally balanced.

This is good enough!
This is even better!

Outfit: Jacket: Express || Booties: Nine West

2) Wear mutual items with both colors
If you don’t think the 2 can mix, mediate them! Bring a mutual ground to the look, meaning an item with both colors in it. Animal prints or stripes that include both black and brown can do this job well. Like this leopard print shirt, see the black and brown in it? That’s what you wanna wear with your black and brown. Have you seen a brown sweater with black stripes, brown shoes with black buckles, other leopard/animal print clutch, shoes, etc? The more closely you can match the brown from your outfit to the  brown of the mediator item, the better. But if you can’t, no big deal, it’ll still look great!

Use leopard print as mutual ground
Black leggings, brown boots

Outfit: Leggings: Express || Leopard shirt: Express || Tote: Aldo

3) Add accessories that compliment the brown
Accessorize! Accessorize! Accessorize!
But before you do, look at your brown color, is it a warm toned or cool toned brown? Put a red item and a blue item next to the brown. If it looks better with the red item –> warm toned. If it looks better with the blue –> cool toned. If you’re not sure, most browns are warm toned, darker browns tend to be more cool toned. Pair it to the jewelry that is the same to compliment the look:
– Warm browns go well with yellow or warm pink toned jewelry: rose gold, yellow gold, copper toned, or gemstones like period, garnet..
– Cool browns go well with silver, magenta or blue toned jewelry: silver, white gold, platinum, or gemstones like aquamarine, turquoise, amethyst..

Use accessories to compliment the brown
Gold jewelry, and yellow glitter for warm brown

Outfit: Watch: Michael Kors || Bracelet: Francesca’s || Booties: Nine West || Earrings: Rocksbox (First month free with code lilyrosexoxo )

Now go ahead, break the no-no rule of no wearing black and brown together. The rule was meant to be broken anyway! But before you go and break this rule, let me know in the comment below if you found these tips useful. Is there any other fashion rule you would like me to help you break? 😉

With love,
Lily Rose

✨ Wood signs for my little Prince baby shower ✨:

- I ordered custom adhesive vinyl decals to be printed for large dimensions (around 3-5 ft tall).
- Cut the shapes out, and trace the shapes on wood boards (I used 1/4” thick plywood).
- I put painter tape around the traced line to reduce wood chipping when cutting with a saw later.
- Cut the shapes on the wood boards with a jig saw.
- Brad nail leftover woods on the back to make a stand for the signs (some small pieces of 2x4 worked well).
- Apply the adhesive back of the art decals onto the wood signs.
- Enjoy! 🩵✨🎠

☺️ What I’d do different if I do this again:
1. The horse and carriage are ok, but I’d loved the castle to be taller.
2. Use foam boards instead of wood for lighter weight. Wood would be great if these signs will be outside where it might be windy, but for indoors event, I would do foam.

My birth story 🤰🏻:
I went to bed at 39w3d with contractions 10 minutes apart, but had thought they were faux labor contractions (because I had Braxton Hicks and prodromal contractions most of pregnancy) so I didn’t think much of it. I woke up at 2am and called my doctor at 4am since contractions were 7 min apart (still thinking they were not real 😂). Good thing she told me to come in. I debated if I should put makeup on and decided to not - wise decision! During the car ride, 7 min apart became 5 min apart. When we arrived at hospital, I was 6cm dilated. I asked for epidural and by the time I got one, I was 8cm dilated. I started pushing shortly after, and baby came after 20 minutes of pushing.
