How I blog with a full time job and an infant #ForBetterBeginnings

January 31, 2018

Having a full time job, running a blog and having an infant. Mamas, that’s like working 3 jobs at the same time, am I right? I got questions from some of you on my Instagram of how I manage my days to do these things at once. So I’d love this opportunity to partner with Playtex Baby and share with you Lucy’s and my schedule. #PlaytexMom #ForBetterBeginnings

how i blog while having a job and an infant how i blog while having a job and an infant how i blog while having a job and an infant how i blog while having a job and an infant

Like I said from my last post, I have gone back to work full time. I work downtown Denver at a tech company as an engineer, which I absolutely love doing. I’m there full time, well almost. I take Fridays off because I still have plenty of days from my maternity leave left. So I go into the office Monday-Thursday, stay at home with Lucy Friday-Sunday. When do I get time to blog? How do I take photos, do I bring the baby with me? Who takes care of Lucy when I’m working and blogging?

Obviously I need a lot of help, and I am not afraid to ask for it so I ask my mom. I ask my mom for help. She’s staying with us and she’s happy to help. I ask my husband for help. He’s been my photographer ever since this blog existed and he’s happy to help.

In details:

Lucy’s schedule

Lucy stays home with my mother while I’m in the office Mon-Thurs. My mom is a manicurist, and she works part time on Friday and Saturday when the salon is busy. It works out perfectly for everyone. I cannot be anymore thankful for such a great woman who loves her kid and her grandkid endlessly to do this for us.

By this age, Lucy’s gotten into a rhythm. She doesn’t follow it to the exact minute, but it makes things predictable.

Eat: She eats every 4 hours. You guys know I’ve been using this Playtex BabyTM Nurser Bottle with Drop-ins® Liners to feed Lucy. It’s easier for her to latch on and it saves time washing the bottle. In addition to the NATURALATCH® Nipple that it comes with, I use interchangeably this Fullsized Nipple. As its name explains, it’s fuller sized. Lucy sucks really hard and the other nipples collapse often during feeding which makes her mad. But this Fullsized Nipple is the perfect fix for that. It’s a bit thicker and so harder to cave in.

Play: After each meal, she gets about half an hour of play time. We either sit together and watch TV, or I let her play on her play mat. This mat has a mini piano at her feet so every time she kicks, it sings a short playful song. Sometimes I flip her over and she can practice on her tummy time. I also started reading books to her. She might not understand the stories fully, but she follows my finger when I point at the illustrations and can recognize the colors.

Nap: After play time, she gets her diaper changed and I put her to bed. She naps for about 2-3 hours, then when she wakes up I feed her again and the whole cycle restarts. At night, she sleeps for solid 6-7 hours. If I put her to sleep at midnight, she wakes up at 6, sometimes 7. People ask me how I get her to sleep this long at such a young age (she started sleeping like this at 6 weeks old). I don’t want to say the advices in this book works for ALL the babies, but if my baby doesn’t sleep for more than 30 min at night, I’d try anything. Plus it is an entertaining read on a different kind of parenting.

My blogging schedule

With this schedule, I get one day of the week to get all of my blog photos for the week done, Sunday. That is the day my mom has off. Dylan is also off and therefore can take photos for me. I pack the car with all my outfit items and we take 2 hours in the morning to get it done.

A tip to make these hours out with your photographer as efficient as possible (if you’re also a blogger with kids, or you’re just short on time):, plan out your outfits the night before. I usually do 3 outfits a week. And I mean plan out everything, iincluding your accessories, handbag, earrings, shoes etc. Then snap a photo with your phone of the entire outfit. So the next morning, all you have to do ist look at the photos and change into the exact look for the shoot. I don’t waste time in the morning choosing which scarf to wear, or which color shoes matches better.

To take things to the next level, I do my hair (how-to here) the evening before too because my hair is long and it takes a while to curl all of it. So Sunday morning, I just quickly run my fingers through it, spray a little texturizer or dry shampoo and done. I can move on to the next thing.

The rest of Sunday is spent editing photos and writing. Oh, I also write all of my Instagram captions for the week at once too. Batching is where it’s at 🙂

I hope this helps answer some of your questions on how I manage my time with working a job, blogging and having a baby. Although this might not work for everyone’s lifestyle, but it does give an insight into how this all could be possible. I can’t wait for the day Lucy turns 6 months old (old enough to get a flu shot) and I can take her out places taking photos with me.

Love reading these tips especially because I’m in the same boat as you juggling between a full time job, blogging, and raising a toddler. I’m going to start curling my hair the night before to save time.

Love these beautiful photos of you and Lucy!

Go girl. And of course it wouldn’t have been as is if the mama’s didn’t help. They are such a big help. Mine looks after my baby 4 days too and I can’t be more thankful ❤

✨ Wood signs for my little Prince baby shower ✨:

- I ordered custom adhesive vinyl decals to be printed for large dimensions (around 3-5 ft tall).
- Cut the shapes out, and trace the shapes on wood boards (I used 1/4” thick plywood).
- I put painter tape around the traced line to reduce wood chipping when cutting with a saw later.
- Cut the shapes on the wood boards with a jig saw.
- Brad nail leftover woods on the back to make a stand for the signs (some small pieces of 2x4 worked well).
- Apply the adhesive back of the art decals onto the wood signs.
- Enjoy! 🩵✨🎠

☺️ What I’d do different if I do this again:
1. The horse and carriage are ok, but I’d loved the castle to be taller.
2. Use foam boards instead of wood for lighter weight. Wood would be great if these signs will be outside where it might be windy, but for indoors event, I would do foam.

Lots of tulle and organza! 🩵 These are what we wore to my baby shower last year. Lucy picked out her dress herself. I had wanted her to wear blue but she couldn’t pass up the chance to wear this fluffy glittery number 💕

My birth story 🤰🏻:
I went to bed at 39w3d with contractions 10 minutes apart, but had thought they were faux labor contractions (because I had Braxton Hicks and prodromal contractions most of pregnancy) so I didn’t think much of it. I woke up at 2am and called my doctor at 4am since contractions were 7 min apart (still thinking they were not real 😂). Good thing she told me to come in. I debated if I should put makeup on and decided to not - wise decision! During the car ride, 7 min apart became 5 min apart. When we arrived at hospital, I was 6cm dilated. I asked for epidural and by the time I got one, I was 8cm dilated. I started pushing shortly after, and baby came after 20 minutes of pushing.

It has been the best experience with recovery and breastfeeding I’ve had between the 2 children. And we can’t get enough of Mr. Colt’s smiles and snuggles 🧸.
